Religious Education

Intent

Religious Education brings people and communities together by generating genuine understanding between it needs something else here eg understanding between people/an ever diverse world.

Our Religious Education curriculum will provide an excellent opportunity for our young people to engage with contemporary issues, developing social, cultural, political, philosophical and historical awareness. Studying our Religious Education curriculum our students will develop the following competencies: –

  • Students will be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of religions and non-religious beliefs, such as Christianity, Islam, atheism and humanism.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of religious beliefs, teachings and sources of wisdom and authority, including through their reading of key religious texts, other texts and scriptures of the religions they are studying.
  • Students will have the ability to construct well-argued, well-informed, balanced and structured written arguments, demonstrating their depth and breadth of understanding of the subject.
  • Students will be able to reflect on and develop their own values, belief, meaning, purpose, truth and their influence on human life.

Students will be able to reflect on and develop their own values, beliefs and attitudes in the light of what they have learnt and contribute to their preparation for adult life in a pluralistic society and global community.

Year 7

As part of the Onwards Together curriculum Year 7 students will start their Religious Education journey by looking at The Island.

Year 8

Our Year 8 RE students will study the following topics:

  1. Festivals
  2. Pilgramages
  3. I’ve got the power!

Termly assessments are built into the Year 8 RE Curriculum. Our assessments are carefully designed to assess a range of progressive knowledge and understanding. All Year 8 students will complete a summative exam during the summer term to assess their learning over the academic year.

Year 9

Our Year 8 RE students will study the following topics:

  1. Who is responsible?
  2. Is God just?
  3. Crime and Punishment

Termly assessments are built into the Year 9 RE Curriculum. Our assessments are carefully designed to assess a range of progressive knowledge and understanding. All Year 9 students will complete a summative exam during the summer term to assess their learning over the academic year.

Years 10 & 11

At Abbot Beyne we deliver AQA Religious Education course.

Our Year 10 GCSE RE students will study the following topics:

  1. Unit 1 – Christianity beliefs and teachings
  2. Unit 1 – Christiantity Practices
  3. Unit 1 – Islamic beliefs and teachings
  4. Unit 1 – Islamic Practices
  5. Unit 2 – Religion, relationship and families

Our Year 11 GCSE RE students will study the following topics:

  1. Unit 2 – Religion and life
  2. Unit 2 – Crime and punishment
  3. Unit 2 – Peace and conflict
  4. GCSE exam practice and revision

At GCSE, students complete assessments at the end of each topic which cover all of the knowledge, understanding and skills set out in the AQA GCSE Religious Studies assessment framework for 2016 onwards. Students also complete past exam questions throughout each unit of work. Year 10 students have a mock Unit 1 exam paper, usually about June and Year 11 students will have two mock examinations Unit 1 and Unit 2, usually in December and March to prepare them for the upcoming GCSEs in the summer. These mock assessments are tightly linked to the AQA GCSE assessment framework using specimen papers.
